Postcritical imperfection sensitivity of sandwich or homogenized orthotropic columns soft in shear and in transverse deformation

چکیده
The previous energetic variational analysis of critical loads and of the choice of finite strain measure for structures very weak in shear, remaining in a state of small strain, is extended to the initial postcritical behavior. For this purpose, consideration of the transverse deformation is found to be essential. It is shown that imperfection sensitivity of such structures, particularly laminate-foam sandwich plates, can arise for a certain range of stiffness and geometric parameters, depending on the proper value of parameter m of the Doyle–Ericksen finite strain tensor, as determined in the previous analysis. The bifurcation is symmetric and Koiter s 2/3-power law is followed. The analytical predictions of maximum load reductions due to imperfection sensitivity are verified by finite element simulations. The possibility of interaction between different instability modes, particularly lateral deflection and bulging, is also explored, with the conclusion that lateral deflection dominates in common practical situations. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Analysis of Laminated Soft Core Sandwich Plate Having Interfacial Imperfections by an Efficient C0 FE Model
An efficient C0 continuous two dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model is developed based on a refined higher order shear deformation theory (RHSDT) for the static analysis of soft core sandwich plate having imperfections at the layer interfaces. In this (RHSDT) theory, the in-plane displacement field for the face sheets and the core is obtained by superposing a globally varying cubic displa...
متن کاملStatic Flexure of Soft Core Sandwich Beams using Trigonometric Shear Deformation Theory
This study deals with the applications of a trigonometric shear deformation theory considering the effect of the transverse shear deformation on the static flexural analysis of the soft core sandwich beams. The theory gives realistic variation of the transverse shear stress through the thickness, and satisfies the transverse shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the bea...
متن کاملA Theoretical and Experimental Study of Failure Maps of Sandwich Beams with Composite Skins and Honeycomb Core
Failure maps of sandwich panels such as beam, plate and shell are of great importance in designing such structures. In this paper, failure maps of sandwich beams with composite skin and honeycomb core are obtained. The effect of transverse shear in skins and core and the effect of double walls of honeycomb core have been taken into account. Shear deformation of skins and core are assumed to be ...
متن کاملA Quasi-3D Polynomial Shear and Normal Deformation Theory for Laminated Composite, Sandwich, and Functionally Graded Beams
Bending analyses of isotropic, functionally graded, laminated composite, and sandwich beams are carried out using a quasi-3D polynomial shear and normal deformation theory. The most important feature of the proposed theory is that it considers the effects of transverse shear and transverse normal deformations. It accounts for parabolic variations in the strain/stress produced by transverse shea...
متن کاملStability and finite strain of homogenized structures soft in shear: Sandwich or fiber composites, and layered bodies
The stability theories energetically associated with different finite strain measures are equivalent if the tangential moduli are transformed as a function of the stress. However, for homogenized soft-in-shear composites, they can differ greatly if the material is in small-strain and constant elastic moduli measured in small-strain tests are used. Only one theory can then be correct. The preced...
